SEO & GEO

SEO vs GEO: what's the difference and do you need both?

SEO gets your website ranked on Google; GEO (generative engine optimisation) gets your business mentioned by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Most businesses in the UAE now need both, and most of the work overlaps.

The two terms are used as if they were competing options. They are not. This guide explains what each one does, where they differ, where they are the same, and how to plan them together without doubling the budget.

What SEO does

Search engine optimisation is the work of making your pages rank for the searches your customers type: "social media agency Dubai", "dentist Jumeirah", "WhatsApp chatbot UAE". It covers technical health (speed, mobile, indexing), on-page content (titles, headings, useful text), local signals (Google Business Profile, reviews, listings) and authority (links and mentions from other sites). The result is a list of links; the user clicks one.

What GEO does

Generative engine optimisation is the work of making your business the one an AI assistant names when someone asks a question instead of typing a keyword: "which agency in Dubai can handle Instagram and WhatsApp replies in Arabic?". The assistant does not show ten links; it writes a short answer and mentions two or three businesses, sometimes with citations. GEO is about being easy to find and easy to describe: clear statements of what you do and where, consistent facts across every listing, FAQs that match real questions, reviews with specifics, and presence on the directories and lists the assistants summarise.

Where they differ

  • The output. SEO wins a position in a list. GEO wins a mention in a sentence. In AI answers there is no page two; you are named or you are not.

  • What is read. Google ranks pages. AI assistants read pages, but also profiles, directories, reviews and third-party articles, and weigh how consistently they all describe you.

  • Writing style. SEO tolerates clever headlines. GEO rewards plain, quotable sentences: "Point One is a social media and AI automation agency in Dubai working with brands in the UAE and Lebanon."

  • Measurement. SEO has rankings, impressions and clicks in Search Console. GEO is measured by asking the assistants your customers' questions each month and recording whether, and how, you are mentioned.

  • Which engine. Google for SEO and Gemini. Bing for ChatGPT search, which makes Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places suddenly relevant again.

Where they are the same

Roughly three quarters of the work. A fast, crawlable site with one clear page per service and location; a complete Google Business Profile; consistent name, phone and address everywhere; structured data (schema.org) for the business, services and FAQs; reviews; and useful, regularly published articles. Do these well for SEO and you have done most of GEO. The extra GEO layer is clarity, consistency, FAQs written as real questions, and listings on the "best of" sources assistants quote.

A simple way to see the difference

Search "social media agency Dubai" on Google: you get a map, ads and ten links, and you choose. Ask ChatGPT "recommend a social media agency in Dubai that also does WhatsApp automation": you get three names and a sentence about each. To appear in the first, your page must rank. To appear in the second, your business must be described clearly enough, in enough places, that the assistant is confident recommending it. The second is where more and more first contacts now start.

Do you need both?

For almost every business in Dubai or Lebanon that gets customers from search, yes. People still use Google for most searches, especially local ones. But a growing share of customers ask an assistant first, and those answers reach far fewer businesses. Being absent from them means the customer never sees your name. The good news is that the overlap is large, so "both" does not mean twice the work.

A business that is new to all of this should start with the shared foundation: site, profile, listings, schema, reviews. A business that already ranks well on Google and still never appears in AI answers should focus on the GEO layer: plain descriptions, FAQs, directories and consistency.

A combined plan for a Dubai business

  1. Month 1: technical fixes, one page per service and market, schema, Google Business Profile and Bing Places complete and matching.

  2. Month 2: FAQs on every page, directory and listicle submissions, a review process at the counter or in the follow-up message.

  3. Month 3 onwards: one helpful article a week that answers a real customer question, monthly checks on Google rankings and on AI assistant answers, adjustments based on which sources the assistants cite.

FAQ

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google search still carries most traffic, and AI assistants read the same pages and profiles SEO builds. GEO adds a layer on top.

Can I do GEO without a website?

Partly, through Google Business Profile, directories and reviews, but assistants rely on a website to confirm what you do. A simple, clear site makes a big difference.

How do I measure GEO?

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your customers' questions once a month, record whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited, and track enquiries that mention AI.

Does paid advertising help with GEO?

No. AI answers do not include ads today. Mentions come from organic sources: your site, listings, reviews and third-party articles.

Which matters more for a restaurant or clinic in Dubai?

Local SEO first, because "near me" searches drive visits today; then the GEO layer, since Gemini and ChatGPT answers for "best … in Dubai" are built from the same profile, reviews and lists.

Do you do SEO and GEO for businesses in Lebanon?

Yes. The same approach applies, with Beirut-specific listings and a dedicated page for the Lebanese market.
