What is GEO? How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT in the UAE

What is GEO - get recommended by ChatGPT in the UAE - Point One

GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of making AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention and recommend your business when people ask for advice. More customers now ask AI "who is the best… in Dubai?" before they search on Google, so being part of that answer matters.

Think about how a customer looks for a clinic, a restaurant or an agency today. Some still type into Google and scroll. A growing number open ChatGPT or Gemini and ask a full question: "Which dermatology clinics in Dubai Marina are good for acne treatment and open on weekends?" The AI replies with three or four names and a reason for each. If your business is not one of them, that customer may never see you at all. GEO is how you get onto that shortlist.

SEO vs GEO

  • SEO helps your website rank in Google's list of results.

  • GEO helps AI tools understand your business and quote it in their answers.

They work best together: AI tools often draw on the same clear, trusted pages that rank well on Google. The difference is in what wins. Google rewards a page that matches a keyword and has links pointing to it. An AI assistant is looking for a business it can describe confidently: what it does, where it is, who it is for, and why it is a safe recommendation. Vague pages, inconsistent details and missing information are what keep businesses out of AI answers, even when their Google ranking is fine.

Each AI tool also has its own sources. ChatGPT search pulls from web search providers (Bing is a major one), so Bing Places deserves attention alongside Google. Gemini and Google AI Overviews lean on Google Business Profile and reviews. Perplexity reads a lot of recent articles and listicles. A business that only looks after Google is only covering part of the map.

How AI tools decide who to recommend

  • Clear, direct descriptions of what your business does and where.

  • Pages that answer real customer questions in plain language.

  • Consistent information about your business across your website, Google Business Profile, social media and directories.

  • Specific facts AI can quote, like your services, locations and languages.

  • Mentions on trusted third-party sites: directories, reviews, press and "best of" lists.

  • Structured data (schema) that labels your business type, location, services and FAQs so machines do not have to guess.

Notice what is not on the list: follower counts, ad spend and a beautiful homepage animation. AI tools get little from any of that. They work mainly from text, and they trust text that is specific and repeated consistently across the web.

Five simple GEO steps for UAE businesses

  1. Write one clear sentence about your business at the top of your homepage. For example: "Point One is a founder-led marketing agency in Dubai." Include what you do, where you are and who you serve. This sentence is what AI tools quote most often.

  2. Add an FAQ section with the questions customers really ask. Opening hours, languages, areas you cover, how booking works, what a service includes. Write the answers the way you would say them to a customer on WhatsApp.

  3. Keep your name, location and contact details the same everywhere online. Website, Google Business Profile, Instagram bio, Bing Places, directories. "Point One", "PointOne" and "Point One Marketing LLC" are harder for a machine to connect as one business, so pick one spelling and use it everywhere.

  4. Publish helpful articles about your services and your city. "How much does X cost in Dubai", "X vs Y for businesses in the UAE", "What to look for in a Z in Abu Dhabi". These are the questions people ask AI, and the articles that answer them are what AI reads.

  5. Get listed on trusted directories and collect genuine reviews. Google Business Profile first, then Bing Places, then the directories for your industry. Reviews with specific details ("they answered my WhatsApp at 10pm") give AI tools something concrete to repeat.

A GEO checklist for a Dubai business

  • Homepage opens with one plain sentence: what, where, for whom.

  • Every service has its own page with a short "In short" summary at the top.

  • Every page has an FAQ with real questions and short answers.

  • Google Business Profile is claimed, complete, and matches the website exactly.

  • Bing Places is claimed (ChatGPT search draws on Bing results, among other sources). The business is listed on two or three directories relevant to its industry.

  • Schema markup is in place: business type, address area, services, FAQs, articles.

  • Articles are published regularly and answer specific questions about the UAE market.

  • Languages, areas served and opening hours are written in text, not hidden in images.

Common mistakes that keep businesses out of AI answers

  • Text inside images. Menus, price lists and service descriptions saved only as pictures are hard for AI tools to read, so put the same information in text too.

  • Agency-speak. "We craft bespoke 360° brand experiences" tells an AI nothing. "We manage Instagram and TikTok for restaurants in Dubai" does.

  • Different details on different platforms. A different phone number on Instagram and Google is enough to lower confidence.

  • No third-party mentions. If the only place your business is described is your own website, AI has nothing to confirm it against.

  • Stale content. A blog that stopped in 2024 reads as a business that may have stopped too.

How to check if it is working

Ask the tools directly, once a month. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask: "best social media agency in Dubai for restaurants", "WhatsApp automation for clinics in the UAE". Note whether you appear, what the AI says about you, and which competitors are named instead. Then look at what those competitors have that you do not: usually a directory listing, more reviews or a clearer service page. Fix that, and ask again next month. This is the same approach we use in our SEO and GEO service. Two related reads: the questions to ask before you choose a social media agency in Dubai, and how an AI employee answers the customers those AI tools send you.

FAQ

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. You earn recommendations by being clear, consistent and helpful online. There is no advertising inside AI answers today.

Do I still need SEO?

Yes. SEO and GEO support each other. A strong website helps both Google and AI tools trust your business.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Directory listings and profile fixes can be picked up within weeks. Articles and reviews build over two to three months. AI tools refresh their sources at different speeds, so check monthly rather than daily.

Does GEO work for small businesses?

Often better than for large ones. AI tools favour specific, clearly described businesses, and a small business with a clear niche and good reviews is easy to recommend.

Does social media help with GEO?

Indirectly. An active Instagram with consistent details supports trust, and content that gets people talking about you online creates the mentions AI reads. A clear social media strategy and GEO work well together.

What is the first thing I should do?

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile and Bing Places, and rewrite the first sentence of your homepage so a stranger understands what you do and where. Everything else builds on that.
